How you can give back to our planet

Featured Companies

I started inspo&grace research by googling “companies who give back.”  It was incredible to see how much companies care about giving back, but this month’s featured company, Ethique, blew me away.  It is a beauty product company based in New Zealand, but they are truly changing the entire world.

Here are some of the mind-boggling facts that inspired the creators of Ethique:  80 billion plastic bottles of shampoo and conditioner (yes, just those two) are thrown out per year.  Only 9% of plastic in the world is recycled. 90% of fish have ingested microplastics per global studies.  And by 2050, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish.  Read that again. That is insane! Those facts, along with many others, got my full attention.  As a side note, my husband and I are like a 90 year old couple who sit with the newspaper, water the plants, get a cup of hot coffee or tea, and watch Planet Earth type of shows for true entertainment.  That is our idea of a wild weekend! But, I think about the footage and images of how incredible and gorgeous our planet is, and then reading these facts breaks my heart.

It starts with caring.

The creators of Ethique did just that, and turned those thoughts/emotions into true action.  They created over 40 hair, body and face beauty products, they have gift sets, sample sets, products for your tiny humans, and more!  All of these products are made of only plant-based, vegan ingredients, cruelty-free, all ingredients are biodegradable, and even the packaging they send the products in is compostable.  All of their business practices involve fair trade, are carbon-neutral (per google dictionary: “making no net release of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, especially through offsetting emissions by planting trees”), and 20% of the profits go back to charities who are also fighting to protect and save our planet.

One of the coolest things I love about these products is that they are super concentrated.  What does that mean and why is that important? First of all, that means your product will last 2-5x longer than regular, bottled products.  Also, the average bottle of body wash or shampoo contains up to 80% (!!) water, and higher at 95% (!!) for conditioner. So when you buy Ethique’s products in bar form, you are getting more product for your money, wasting less water, and avoiding the plastic.  I have been using my Ethique shampoo this entire month, and I can vouch for all of these things. I only have to run it over my hair a couple of times, and then it suds up like crazy and leaves my hair so incredibly soft. I have never had a shampoo do that.

Ethique’s impact thus far is staggering, in a very good way!  From their products replacing your typical plastic-bottled goods, they have saved this beautiful Earth from 4.3 million bottles.  Based on this success and their dreams and goals, they aim to save the planet from 50 million plastic bottles by 2025.  The best part? YOU can be a part of something so much greater than yourself. You can be a small part of a huge movement to decrease our use of plastic, support fair trade, natural products that turn around and give back more to charities.  And as a bonus, you get to use incredible beauty products in your everyday routine.
